Tahmoor Public School is privileged to have a Primary STEM/STEAM Specialist, Dr Marc Noakes, provide unique science opportunities and classroom support that enrich and extend student and teacher learning.
As part of this program teachers have been working with Dr Noakes to create learning sequences for our students which help students to achieve outcomes in the NSW K-6 Science and Technology syllabus and the NSW K-6 Mathematics syllabus.
Tahmoor Public School is also a Primary STEM Hub, and cooperates with other schools in the local region by sharing STEM equipment and resources. We also host the annual Primary STEM Expo, which is an event of regional significance.
Free tickets available through Eventbrite
The 2018 Primary STEM Expo is shaping up as an event of regional significance, with more than 160 teachers and students representing 40 schools and 20 STEM organisations from the Central Coast to Wagga Wagga. Our partner organisations include the Australia Museum, National Maritime Museum, National Botanic Gardens, University of Adelaide, Wollongong Science Space, Code Club, Makers Empire, Me3D and Auckland University. The event includes workshops run by students for students, workshops run by teachers for teachers, displays and hands-on activities. The event is free for students from preschool, primary school and high school, teachers, and parents, and aims to foster collaborative and supportive partnerships that build capacity for high quality STEM/STEAM teaching and learning through Primary STEM Hubs.
Year 1B have been learning to solve problems using coding and algorithms. They have developed an understanding of graphic coding using Beebots, Cod-a-pillar and Lightbot. They extended on Lightbot by role playing their own 3D version using command cards, boxes and a torch.
